MULCHING grinds standing brush and small trees where they stand and leaves the material on the ground as a layer of chips. Nothing is hauled off, so there are no dump fees and no burn pile. That mulch layer holds soil in place and breaks down over time, which is useful on a pasture or a hunting lot. The roots stay in the ground, so anything that resprouts will resprout. GRUBBING takes the root out. A machine pushes or pulls the whole plant, root ball and all, which is what you need before building anything or if you want the regrowth to stop. Material has to be loaded, trucked and dumped, and that is priced by volume and distance. Ask specifically whether removal is in the number you were given. Two quotes far apart usually differ on exactly this.
BURNING is the traditional answer and the one with the most rules. Outdoor burning is regulated and county burn bans come and go with conditions, so a plan that depends on burning is a plan that depends on the weather cooperating on a schedule.
WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO WITH THE LAND decides the method. Pasture or recreational use, mulching is usually right and cheapest. Building a house, a barn or a road, you need grubbing and grading because a slab does not go over root voids. Selling it, mulching makes it look right for the least money.
PROTECTED AND REGULATED THINGS EXIST. Wetland areas, certain drainage features and nesting seasons all carry real restrictions, and a contractor who has worked this area will raise them before the machines move rather than after somebody complains.
